How a passion for tabletop RPGs turned into the fastest-growing online PDF Editor in the Pacific Northwest.
Tavernus Game started in 2019 in a basement apartment in Renton, Washington. Our founding team — a group of four software engineers who also happened to be obsessive tabletop RPG players — had a very specific frustration: filling out PDF character sheets was an absolute nightmare.
Every week, our Dungeon Master printed fresh character sheets for our D&D campaign. Every week, someone spilled coffee on theirs. Every week, we scrambled to re-enter stats, spell lists, inventories, and backstory notes by hand. We tried every free PDF editor on the market. Some couldn't handle interactive form fields. Others crashed on multi-page documents. The expensive desktop applications required downloads, licenses, and the patience of a saint.
So we decided to build our own tool. Not a full-blown enterprise platform — just a fast, browser-based utility that could handle complex PDF character sheets without freezing, crashing, or corrupting the file. We called it "Tavernus" after the fictional tavern in our campaign where most of our best ideas were born (both in-character and out).
Within months, the tool had spread far beyond our gaming table. Fellow tabletop RPG players on Reddit, Discord, and various TTRPG forums discovered Tavernus and started using it for Pathfinder chronicle sheets, Call of Cthulhu investigation logs, and Shadowrun character dossiers. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive — but it also pointed to something bigger.
Users started uploading tax forms, insurance claims, job applications, and lease agreements. Teachers used it to create fillable worksheets. Real estate agents loved the merge feature for compiling property packages. Freelancers praised the e-signature capability for signing contracts without printing a single page.
By the end of 2020, Tavernus had grown from a niche TTRPG utility into a legitimate SaaS product. We incorporated as Tavernus Game LLC, established our headquarters at 700 Powell Ave SW in Renton, WA, and invested in building a proper cloud infrastructure capable of handling enterprise-grade document workloads.
Today, Tavernus PDF Editor serves over 185,000 active users across the United States and 47 other countries. Our platform processes more than 2.4 million document edits per month. We offer a comprehensive suite of PDF tools — editing, merging, splitting, form filling, e-signatures, watermarking, redaction, and format conversion — all running on SOC 2 Type II certified infrastructure.
We've grown from four founders to a team of twenty-three dedicated professionals spanning engineering, product design, customer success, and security operations. Despite our growth, we've never lost sight of our roots. Tabletop RPG gamers remain a core part of our user community, and we continue to optimize our Form Filler specifically for the complex, multi-column, calculation-heavy PDF forms that the TTRPG community relies on.
Our mission is simple: make PDF editing fast, secure, and accessible to everyone — from gamers rolling dice to professionals closing deals.
Built the initial browser-based PDF form filler as a side project for our weekly D&D group. Named it after the tavern in our campaign — "The Golden Tavernus."
Shared the tool on Reddit's r/DnD and r/Pathfinder communities. Reached 5,000 users in the first month. Received requests to add merging, splitting, and annotation features.
Incorporated as Tavernus Game LLC in Washington State. Launched Pro subscriptions. Hired our first two full-time engineers beyond the founding team.
Released Enterprise plan with SSO, audit logs, and HIPAA BAA. Signed first B2B contracts with small law firms and accounting practices in the Pacific Northwest.
Achieved SOC 2 Type II certification. Crossed 100,000 active users. Launched advanced OCR text recognition and AI-powered auto-field detection.

Surpassed 185,000 active users and 2.4 million monthly document edits. Launched advanced redaction tools, custom watermarks, and PDF/A archival export. Team grew to 23.
